Michael Stuart QC called to the Bar in 2003 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2017. With a background in civil litigation, since taking silk Michael’s practice has become principally focused on high value reparation cases, where he has particular experience in cases involving traumatic brain injury, chronic pain and industrial disease, general commercial and property disputes and professional negligence. Michael is also instructed in cases concerning financial provision on divorce. Michael is a Registered Mediator with the Scottish Mediation Network and the Faculty of Advocates Dispute Resolution Service.

Between 2009 and 2013 Michael held office as a full time Advocate Depute during which time he prosecuted many trials including charges of murder, serious sexual offending and, at the time, the UK’s largest copyright violation. He maintains an active interest in criminal prosecution work, prosecuting as an ad hoc Advocate Depute. In 2013 he was appointed a Court Reporter in respect of child matters. In 2015 he qualified as a mediator. In 2016 he was appointed Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Government. In 2017 he was appoint Queen’s Counsel. Michael is a member of the Faculty of Advocates’ Professional Standards and Civil Procedure Committees.

Michael has extensive court experience. Throughout his career, including his time as an Advocate Depute, Michael has amassed considerable experience in the examination and cross-examination of witnesses. Of particular note is his experience in leading and cross-examining expert witnesses.

Before calling to the Bar Michael was a director of one of Scotland’s and Europe’s most successful independent cycle businesses where he was instrumental in the successful development and growth of the company’s service related business.

Michael is noted for his “strong advocacy skills”, his  “go-get” attitude and his “great client handling skills”, whether individual or corporate.
