Helping the young unlock their potential
Ampersand junior Usman Tariq has become a leading light in a mentoring scheme which aims to help young people in Scotland to realise their potential.
Mosaic was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2007, and Usman Tariq heard about its work through friends in London who acted as mentors. As an already-established champion of mentoring, he was thrilled to be asked to join a group to oversee Mosaic’s expansion north of the Border.
“I was delighted to be involved. There are many young people growing up around us in Scotland who just need some encouraging words or a guiding hand to open up a new world of opportunities,” said Usman.
“For these young people, one of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see a world that might not seem open or attainable.”
Mosaic’s mentoring programmes create opportunities for young people in the most deprived communities. Its vision is for all young people to be supported to realise their potential.
“I have always been interested in mentoring…I have been involved in Glasgow University’s mentoring programme for law students for a number of years,” said Usman.
“After several months of planning, Mosaic was launched in Scotland at the Prince’s Trust offices in Glasgow. Over the course of this year, we hope to deliver primary and secondary school mentoring programmes and an enterprise challenge. We are very fortunate to be able to work with the Prince’s Trust to deliver these programmes, and have the wonderful support of HRH The Prince of Wales.”
